Waterfalls of South Gippsland by Travis Easton

Waterfalls of South Gippsland by Travis Easton.

A note from the author:

"Seventeen years in the making, ‘Waterfalls of South Gippsland’ is 400 pages long.

Putting this book together has been a very long and rewarding journey. It documents 200 waterfalls (I could have kept going but this felt like a nice round figure) and another 34 water features of interest (I define a waterfall as being 3m/10 feet or higher on a mapped watercourse and this category includes a few drops of interest that fall below this mark). All up it documents 234 drops and 405 tiers.

Only 26 (11%) of these have officially recognised names. Only 50 (21%) appear on modern maps with another 23 (10%) appearing on historical maps. This means that 161 (69%) of these waterfalls as far as I know have not been mapped before, although a few have of them have been photographed and I'm sure all of them have been visited by someone at some point.

48 (21%) have some sort of tourist friendly infrastructure or access with 30% having some sort of track to them. Meaning that 70% of the included drops are off-track with varying degrees of access that I rate as easy, medium, hard or extremely hard off-track. Although I include access directions and co-ordinates the majority of the waterfalls included do not have easy access, so it is not a guidebook in a traditional sense and 22 (9%) of them are on private property or reference areas with no access at all. As such, this book is more about documenting previously undocumented beauty spots with information that those with existing off-track experience can use to access these places. If you do not have existing off-track experience, I would not recommend trying to visit the majority of the waterfalls this book but hope this book will allow the reader to enjoy these amazing beauty spots from afar.

A lot of research has gone into the historical and naming side of things with a few corrections of naming anomalies in the mix. I have also gone to a lot of effort to liaise with locals and landowners in this process."
